Grassy Strings, a pioneering bluegrass duo from Kolkata, India, stands out in a landscape almost devoid of bluegrass music. The Guitar- mandolin duo skillfully fuses traditional bluegrass tunes with Indian folk and alternative songs in Bangla, Hindi, and Nepali, showcasing the natural connection between American and Indian folk music despite their cultural differences. They are Known for their energetic rhythmic performances with strong chops in mandolin and guitar and mastery of string instruments, Grassy Strings not only covers standards but also composes original pieces. They have brought the unique sounds of bluegrass to audiences across India and abroad as the first Indian band including performances at Bluegrass in La Roche, France and educational tours in Nepal. In 2021 Grassy Strings played in the 50+ hours long virtual fund raising event for youth education called ‘Jam-a-thon’ arranged by California Bluegrass Association (CBA).The band gained recognition on various U.S. and European bluegrass radio channels such as Bluegrass Today Week Top 20 Countdown, The Bluegrass Jamboree, and Countryland. As ambassadors of bluegrass in India, they eagerly anticipate their upcoming US debut, with scheduled appearances at the festivals in October 2024, further bridging the gap between diverse musical traditions.
